The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) administered by the US Department of Labor connects undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates with disabilities to paid internships and full-time opportunities with federal agencies and private sector employers. Employers can hire students through the WRP for opportunities in a variety of fields, anything from business to science--students from all majors and backgrounds are welcome! The program is offered at over 330 Colleges and Universities across the US.
WRP applicants must:
Have a disability
Be a U.S. citizen
Be enrolled on a full-time basis (unless the severity of the disability precludes the student from taking a substantially full-time load) OR have graduated within the past year
Full-time students can be at any academic level--undergraduate or graduate, first-year students through recent graduates.
Each candidate must self-certify that they are eligible for the program by confirming the following statement: “I certify that I am a person with an intellectual, severe physical, or psychiatric disability that qualifies me for the federal Schedule A hiring authority.” Candidates must check a box next to this statement prior to registering for WRP.
Interested candidates must first register online at the WRP site. Once a candidate’s registration is approved, they will receive an email to complete the rest of the application.
To complete the remaining requirements for the application, candidates should submit the following documents.
Resume (Required) - Candidates are highly advised to have their resumes reviewed by a Center for Career Development and Internships (CDI) staff member before submitting online. Candidates can attend a resume review appointment virtually or in-person. Appointments can be scheduled via Handshake or by visiting the CDI during their drop-in hours.
College Transcript (Required) - Transcripts can be official or unofficial copies.
Unofficial transcripts can be obtained online through Wingspan. (Go to the "Student Tab" in Wingspan, then click on "Student Records" and then select "Academic Transcript".)
Official transcripts can be obtained by following the steps listed on the Records and Registration website.
Schedule A Letter (Required) - The Schedule A letter is a required as a part of the application as of 2025. For more information about how to obtain a Schedule A Letter, please refer to the WRP webpage here.
Additional Documents (Optional) - Candidates can upload additional supporting documents such as letters of recommendation, writing samples. etc.
Next Steps: Eligible candidates may opt for a 30-minute informational interview with a WRP recruiter. To help prepare, we encourage scheduling a virtual or in-person mock interview appointment with the CDI.
Participants who successfully complete the application process will be added to the WRP database, which is accessible to employers each December.
